OUR MISSION

The Institute for Community Development is newly established by the School of Professional Studies at the College of Charleston in Charleston South Carolina.

After the tragic event of the Emanuel Nine shooting our community decided to take action and implement a system to take preventative measures to keep our community strong and united in the face of adversity.

Overall Strategic Mandate

The overall strategic mandate for the Institute of Community Development is to advance the body of knowledge and practice for the systems approach to community development.

Specific Strategic Objectives:

  • Develop a systems oriented approach for advancing the quality of community life at both the state and local level in South Carolina known as the Quality of Community LIfe Initiative (QCLI)
  • Develop a partnership with the South Carolina Human Affairs Commission (SCHAC) to implement the Quality of Community Life Initiative through Community Relations Councils and an Annual Conference
  • Develop a coalition of public and private sector organizations and individuals to support the QCLI kown as the Community Enhancement Coalition (CEC)

Core Activities of the Institute:

  • Develop the methods (intellectual property) that comprise the systems approach to community development
  • Use those methods to develop state and county level community development processes via the Community Relations/Support Councils of SCHAC 
  • Establish, maintain, and extend the CEC for the purpose of providing both public and private sector support for the QCLI at both state and county level
  • Provide training and development services for those who wish to participate and support the QCLI and for those who are seeking certification in the systems approach to community development
  • Conduct research on the impact of the systems approach to community development
